There are places you visit once.
And then there are places that somehow stay with you long after you’ve returned home.
Lake Ohrid is one of those places.
For generations, locals have known how special this corner of North Macedonia really is. Now, the rest of Europe is paying attention too.
In 2026, Time Out ranked Lake Ohrid, North Macedonia, as the No. 1 most beautiful place in Europe, putting it ahead of some of the continent’s most famous natural and cultural destinations.
And if you’ve ever watched the sun disappear behind the mountains while sitting beside Lake Ohrid, you probably understand why.
Lake Ohrid Takes the No. 1 Spot in Europe
Time Out’s European travel editors and writers selected their most beautiful places across the continent for 2026.
At the top of the list?
Lake Ohrid, North Macedonia.
The ranking places Ohrid ahead of destinations including Saturnia Hot Springs in Tuscany, Giant’s Causeway in Northern Ireland, Alberobello in Italy, the Norwegian Fjords, Kew Gardens in London, Amsterdam’s Prinsengracht Canal and Barcelona’s Casa Batlló.
For a relatively small destination in the Balkans, that’s quite an achievement.
But Ohrid doesn’t need skyscrapers, enormous resorts or luxury shopping districts to impress visitors.
Its beauty comes from something much simpler.
Blue water.
Mountains.
Centuries of history.
Small villages.
Old churches.
Quiet beaches.
And sunsets you remember for years.
Why Did Time Out Choose Lake Ohrid?
One of the things that makes Ohrid different from many famous European destinations is the combination of nature and history in one relatively compact area.
Lake Ohrid is considered one of Europe’s oldest natural lakes.
Surrounded by mountains and historic settlements, it has developed an extraordinary ecosystem over its immense lifetime.
Then there is the city itself.
Walk through Ohrid’s Old Town and you’ll find cobbled streets, traditional houses with terracotta roofs, ancient archaeological sites and churches appearing around almost every corner.
Perhaps the most famous view of all is the Church of St. John at Kaneo.
Standing above the lake with the mountains in the distance, Kaneo has become one of the most recognizable images of North Macedonia.
But photographs only tell half the story.
You really have to stand there yourself.
Ohrid: A Different Kind of European Holiday
One of the interesting comparisons made by international travel media is between Lake Ohrid and Italy’s famous Lake Como.
Both offer spectacular blue water, mountains and historic settlements.
But the atmosphere is very different.
Ohrid remains considerably less crowded than many of Europe’s best-known lake destinations.
Here, you can still find a small beach and spend the afternoon swimming without feeling like you’re inside a giant tourist resort.
You can sit beside the water with a coffee.
Drive through tiny villages.
Stop at a roadside viewpoint simply because the view looks beautiful.
Have dinner beside the lake.
And watch the sun disappear behind the mountains.
Sometimes luxury isn’t about five-star hotels.
Sometimes it’s simply having enough space and time to enjoy where you are.
More Than Just Ohrid Old Town
One mistake first-time visitors often make is staying only inside Ohrid itself.
The Old Town is absolutely worth exploring, but some of the most beautiful experiences begin once you start driving south along the lake.
The road toward St. Naum is one of our favorite routes in the region.
And there are plenty of reasons to stop along the way.
Trpejca
Often described as one of the most beautiful villages on Lake Ohrid, Trpejca sits between the mountain and the water.
Its small beach, traditional houses, fishing boats and incredibly clear water make it a perfect place to slow down for a few hours.
Have lunch beside the lake, go for a swim and forget about your schedule for a while.
That’s the whole point.
Bay of Bones
Continue along the lake and you’ll reach the famous Bay of Bones Museum, a reconstructed prehistoric pile-dwelling settlement built above the water.
It’s one of those places where the landscape and history come together beautifully.
And the surrounding section of Lake Ohrid is spectacular.
St. Naum
At the southern end of the lake lies one of North Macedonia’s most famous destinations — the Monastery of Saint Naum.
The monastery, lake and nearby natural springs create one of the most peaceful settings in the entire Ohrid region.
Take one of the small boats through the springs, walk around the monastery grounds and give yourself enough time to simply enjoy the surroundings.
Don’t make St. Naum a 30-minute photo stop.
It deserves much more than that.
Then Drive Up Into Galičica
If Lake Ohrid looks beautiful from the shore, wait until you see it from above.
Galičica National Park rises dramatically between Lake Ohrid and Lake Prespa.
Driving through the national park takes you away from the busy lakeshore and into an entirely different landscape.
Mountain roads lead toward panoramic viewpoints where, under the right conditions, you can experience extraordinary views across the region.
For travelers who enjoy hiking, photography, cycling or simply scenic driving, Galičica should absolutely be part of an Ohrid trip.
This is also where having your own vehicle completely changes the experience.
You decide where to stop.
You decide how long to stay.
And sometimes an unplanned stop becomes the best memory of the entire holiday.
Find Your Own Hidden Beach
Here’s something you won’t always find in traditional travel guides.
You don’t necessarily need to visit the most famous beach.
Drive along the southern shoreline of Lake Ohrid and you’ll discover numerous smaller beaches and coves around Peštani, Trpejca and Ljubaništa.
Some are easy to reach.
Others require a little exploring.
That’s part of the fun.
Pack your swimming gear, some water and a towel and make a day out of discovering your own favorite corner of the lake.
Experience Ohrid in the Evening
Eventually, return to Ohrid.
Park the car.
And walk.
Ohrid changes when the sun begins to set.
The temperature drops, restaurants fill up, boats return across the lake and the lights of the Old Town begin reflecting on the water.
Walk along the promenade.
Explore the narrow streets.
Find a restaurant overlooking the lake.
Try local food and wine.
And don’t worry too much about what you’re supposed to see next.
Some places are best experienced without an itinerary.
Ohrid is one of them.
One Destination, Many Different Experiences
Perhaps this is the real reason Lake Ohrid deserves international recognition.
You can experience it in completely different ways.
Spend one day exploring history and churches.
Spend another swimming.
Drive through Galičica.
Visit St. Naum.
Explore Trpejca.
Take a boat across the lake.
Find a hidden beach.
Try local food.
Watch the sunset from Kaneo.
Or simply sit beside the lake doing absolutely nothing.
And somehow, none of those days feels wasted.
